To use LinkedIn, X and YouTube for work without the feed, go straight to the page you need (messages, a profile, a search, a specific video) instead of the home page, shut the home feeds, and give each visit a purpose and a time limit. The work parts of these sites rarely live on the feed. The feed is just the page you land on first.
Why work use turns into scrolling
You open LinkedIn to reply to one message. The home page loads first, a post catches your eye, and twenty minutes later the message is still unanswered. The same happens on X when you check one thread, and on YouTube when you look up one tutorial and the sidebar offers ten more.
The problem is not the work task. It is the route. Every visit passes through the feed, so every visit is a chance to get lost.
Step 1: write down what you actually use each site for
Be specific. Common work uses:
- LinkedIn: messages, job posts, a candidate's or client's profile, your company page, search.
- X: posting, replying to mentions, reading a specific account or thread, searching a topic, lists.
- YouTube: a specific tutorial, a conference talk, your own channel, a playlist your team shares.
None of these need the home feed.
Step 2: go to the page, not the home page
- Bookmark the exact pages you use, such as your LinkedIn messages or a saved search, instead of the site's home page.
- Use search directly. On YouTube, search for the talk by name. On X, search the account or topic.
- On X, lists are a way to follow a fixed set of accounts in time order, which is closer to a work tool than the algorithmic home timeline. At the time of writing, lists are available from the X menu, though X changes its layout often.
- Open links people share with you instead of browsing for them.
Step 3: shut the home feeds
Bookmarks help, but the home page is always one click away, and the logo in the corner sends you there. Shutting the feed removes that trap.
I built I've had it for this. It is a browser extension for Chrome, Edge, Brave and Arc that shuts the feed pages on these sites while the rest keeps working:
| Site | What counts as the feed | What stays usable |
|---|---|---|
| The home feed | Messaging, jobs, profiles, search, company pages | |
| X | Home, Explore, trending | Single posts, profiles, search, messages |
| YouTube | Home, Shorts, trending, the subscriptions feed | Search, single videos, playlists, channels |
On YouTube it also hides the recommendations next to a video and the end-screen suggestions, even on pages it lets through. The details per site are in hide the LinkedIn feed, hide the X For You feed and hide YouTube recommendations.
Step 4: time-box each visit
Pick a window before you start: two minutes to reply, fifteen to research. A visible timer keeps "one quick check" honest.
In my extension, this is what the Ask first mode does. When you open a site on purpose, an intent gate asks what you came to do (one of the choices is literally Work) and how long you need: 2, 5 or 15 minutes for a specific page. A small pill shows the time left, and you can end it early. YouTube videos filed under education or how-to get longer windows through Learn mode.
A link a colleague sends opens straight away with a 30-second quick pass for that page, without the feed. If you need longer, staying is a new decision.
Suggested setup for work
| Site | Suggested mode | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Ask first | You need it, but rarely the feed | |
| X | Ask first or No feeds | Search and profiles stay open either way |
| YouTube | Ask first with Learn mode on | Tutorials get longer windows |
LinkedIn is set to Untouched by default in my extension, so switch it in the popup if you want the feed shut. All modes are explained in site modes.
Messages without the feed
Messages are often the main reason to open LinkedIn or X at work. With Messages always open on, which it is by default, messaging pages open without any pause and do not count against your time.
Questions
Can I use LinkedIn without seeing the feed?
Yes. Go directly to messaging, jobs, profiles or search, and use a feed blocker to shut the home feed so the logo cannot pull you back into it.
How do I use YouTube for work without getting distracted?
Search for the specific video, hide the recommendations in the sidebar and at the end, and set a time limit before you start watching.
How do I use X for work without the For You timeline?
Use search, profiles, notifications and lists, and shut the home timeline so you do not land on it by default.
Will blocking the LinkedIn feed stop my messages?
Not with a feed blocker. Only the feed is shut. Messaging, jobs and profiles keep working.
