X doesn't let you remove the For You tab, but you can read the Following tab instead, or shut the home timeline altogether. On a computer, I've had it in Chrome, Edge, Brave or Arc shuts X's home timeline (both tabs) and Explore with No feeds, or gives X a daily allowance with Daily limit, while single posts, profiles, search and your DMs keep working.

What does X let you do on its own?

At the time of writing:

  • The Following tab. At the top of the home timeline, Following shows posts from accounts you follow, and you can sort it by most recent. It is the closest thing to a For You off switch. X has at times opened on For You again, so check which tab you are on.
  • Lists. You can make a List of a few accounts and read that instead of the home timeline. It is a smaller, chosen feed, and you can pin it.
  • Mute and not interested. Muting words and accounts, and marking posts as not interesting, trims what For You shows.

There is no setting that hides For You for good, and none that limits your time on X.

How do I hide the X home feed with I've had it?

  1. Add the extension from the install page.
  2. In setup, X starts on Daily limit with 15 minutes a day. Pick No feeds if you want the home timeline shut from the start.
  3. Keep Messages always open ticked for X (it is by default).
  4. Open x.com. With No feeds, you see a quiet full-screen page saying the feed is shut. With Daily limit, X works as usual and a small timer shows the minutes left today.

One honest limit: For You and Following are two tabs on the same page, x.com/home, so the extension can't shut one and leave the other. It shuts the home timeline as a whole. If you want the Following tab and nothing else, X's own tab, or a List, is the better tool.

Which X pages are shut, and what still works?

X pageAddressWith No feeds
Home timeline (For You and Following)x.com/, x.com/homeShut
Explore and trends/explore, /i/trending, /i/topicsShut
Messages and chat/messages, /i/chatOpen as usual, not counted
A post from a link elsewhere/name/status/...Opens for 30 seconds
A profile, post, List or search you open yourselfany other pageA short pause, then up to two minutes

Twitter addresses count too: twitter.com is treated the same as x.com.

A post someone sends you, opened from outside X, gets a quick pass: 30 seconds, up to four times an hour. Going somewhere on purpose gets the intent gate: a short breath, a reason, then a window for that one thing. On those pages, the scroll check still notices if a profile or a reply thread turns into 25 screens without stopping.

Which mode should X be on?

  • Daily limit (the default): X works as usual for its minutes (15 by default, 5 to 90), then the feeds shut until midnight. DMs don't count with Messages always open on. Good if you use X for news or work and just want a ceiling.
  • No feeds: the home timeline and Explore are always shut. Good if the timeline is the problem and you only need posts people send you.
  • Ask first: the timeline opens after a 15-second breath and a reason, for two or five minutes.

Compare them in site modes.

Does this work on my phone?

No. The extension works in desktop browsers only, and the phone app shows your numbers and changes your plan but doesn't block inside the X app. On a phone, the Following tab and Lists are your best built-in options, and Screen Time (iPhone) or Digital Wellbeing (Android) can limit the X app as a whole.

Questions

How do I get rid of the For You tab on X?

You can't remove it with X's settings. You can read the Following tab or a List instead, or use I've had it on a computer to shut the whole home timeline and Explore.

Can I keep the Following tab and block For You?

Not with the extension: both tabs are on the same page, so it shuts both. X's Following tab, sorted by most recent, or a List, does that job better.

Can I still open a tweet someone sends me?

Yes. A post opened from a link outside X opens for 30 seconds. One you go to yourself opens after a short pause.

Does it work on twitter.com?

Yes. twitter.com and x.com are treated as the same site.

X still loads its feed. What do I do?

X changes its pages often. Check X's mode in the popup, refresh the tab, and if the feed still shows, email me the address. More in troubleshooting.
