The scroll check is a gentle nudge that comes up after you have scrolled 25 screens on a watched site without stopping. It tells you how far that is, asks whether you found what you came for, and lets you leave or take two more minutes. You can set it to 15, 25 or 40 screens.

When does the scroll check come up?

It counts how far you scroll down on a page that is open to you: during a window you chose at the pause, a quick pass, daily limit time, an unlock or a paid hour. When the distance reaches the number of screens you set, the nudge appears.

The count includes:

  • The mouse wheel and trackpad scrolling down.
  • Swiping on a touch screen.
  • Page Down, the space bar, the down arrow and j, when you are not typing in a box.

Scrolling back up does not count. If you stop scrolling for 45 seconds, the count starts again from zero, because a long pause usually means you were reading or watching.

Where does it not run?

  • On sites set to Untouched.
  • On messages, when Messages always open is on.
  • While a pause screen or a wall is showing.

What does the nudge say?

It says how many screens you scrolled without stopping, turns that into a height in meters, and compares it to something you know, like a giraffe, a house or a famous building. Then it asks: found what you came for?

You get two buttons:

  1. Yes, I'm done. Ends your window on that site and takes you back to the page you came from, or closes the tab.
  2. Two more minutes. Gives you two minutes from that moment, shown on the pill at the bottom of the page. This button is offered once per page. If the nudge comes up again on the same page, the only choice is to leave.

The page dims behind the nudge, and any video is paused while it is up.

How do I change the number of screens?

  1. Open your dashboard.
  2. In Tune it, find Doomscroll nudge after.
  3. Pick 15, 25 or 40 screens.

The setting is saved to your account and reaches every linked browser on the next sync. Twenty-five is the default. Choose 15 if you want to catch yourself sooner, or 40 if the nudge comes up during scrolling you meant to do, like reading a long thread.

Does the scroll check count in my stats?

Yes. Your dashboard records how often you were nudged, and every time you chose Yes, I'm done adds a little to the minutes you got back that day.

Why a nudge and not a block?

On a page that is already open to you, the problem is rarely being there. It is not noticing how long you have been there. Endless feeds remove natural stopping points, so the scroll check puts one back: a moment where you decide whether to carry on, instead of the feed deciding for you. If you find you always leave when nudged, that is a sign to move the site to a stricter site mode.

Questions

What is a doomscroll nudge?

It is the scroll check: after you scroll a set number of screens without stopping, I've had it pauses the page and asks whether you found what you came for.

How many screens before the scroll check appears?

Twenty-five by default. You can choose 15, 25 or 40 on your dashboard, under Tune it.

Does pausing reset the scroll check?

Yes. Stop scrolling for 45 seconds and the count starts again.

Can I keep scrolling after the nudge?

Once per page you can choose Two more minutes. After that the nudge offers only Yes, I'm done.
