To use Instagram only for messages on a computer, open instagram.com/direct directly and shut everything else that scrolls. With I've had it in Chrome, Edge, Brave or Arc, set Instagram to No feeds and keep Messages always open ticked: your DMs work as usual and uncounted, while the home feed, Reels and Explore stay shut.
Can Instagram itself be set to messages only?
Not at the time of writing. There is no Instagram setting that hides the feed and keeps DMs. A few things help a little:
- Go straight to the inbox. Bookmark
instagram.com/direct/inbox/and open that instead of the home page. You skip the feed on the way in, though it is one click away. - Following view. Instagram can show the home feed from accounts you follow only, newest first. It is calmer, but it is still a feed.
- Notifications. In Instagram's settings you can turn off most notifications except messages, so the phone buzzes for people, not for suggestions.
The weak spot is the same each time: the feed is always there, and the inbox is a click from Reels.
How do I set up Instagram for messages only with I've had it?
- Add the extension from the install page.
- In setup, leave Instagram on No feeds (the default).
- Make sure Messages always open is ticked under Instagram. It is on by default.
- Bookmark
instagram.com/direct/inbox/. - Open the bookmark. The inbox loads as usual. Try clicking the home icon: the feed is shut.
Messages are not watched at all while that box is ticked. They are not timed, they don't use your daily budget, and the scroll check doesn't run in a chat. More on that in messages always open.
What happens when a message contains a post or a reel?
| What you open | What happens with No feeds |
|---|---|
Your inbox and chats (/direct) | Open as usual |
| A post, reel or profile, from a link outside Instagram | Opens for 30 seconds |
| A post, reel or profile, from inside Instagram | A short pause, then up to two minutes |
| Home feed, Reels, Explore | Shut |
When you click a shared post inside Instagram, the extension sees you moving from the inbox to a specific page. It asks what you came for, then gives you a two-minute window for it. That is usually enough to see what a friend sent and reply. When the window ends, you are asked again, so it doesn't quietly turn into an hour on profiles.
Links from outside Instagram, like an email or another chat app, get a quick pass instead: 30 seconds, no questions, up to four times an hour.
Can I keep messages but allow the feed for a few minutes a day?
Yes. Set Instagram to Daily limit. The site works as usual for its minutes (15 by default, from 5 up to 90), then the feeds shut until midnight. With Messages always open on, time in DMs doesn't count toward those minutes. See site modes for the details.
If you would rather be asked each time, Ask first opens the feed after a breath and a reason, for two or five minutes.
Does this work on my phone?
No. I've had it blocks in desktop browsers only. The phone app shows your numbers and lets you change your plan, but it does not block inside the Instagram app.
On a phone, Screen Time (iPhone) and Digital Wellbeing (Android) can limit the Instagram app, but they limit the whole app, messages included. If messages are the part you want, one practical setup is to keep Instagram's phone app on a short limit or off the home screen, and do your messaging on a computer where the feed is shut.
Questions
Can I use Instagram just for DMs?
Instagram has no messages-only setting. On a computer, the I've had it extension can shut the home feed, Reels and Explore while instagram.com/direct keeps working as usual.
Do my Instagram messages count toward my time limit?
Not while Messages always open is ticked. Messages are left alone completely: not timed, not counted and not checked for scrolling.
Can I open a reel someone sends me in a DM?
Yes. Opening it from inside Instagram gives a short pause and a two-minute window. Opening a link from outside Instagram gives 30 seconds straight away.
Can I still look at someone's profile?
Yes, briefly. A profile you go to on purpose opens after a short pause for up to two minutes. If you need longer, set Instagram to Ask first or Daily limit.
Does Instagram know I'm using an extension?
The extension runs in your browser and doesn't send anything to Instagram. What it stores and syncs is on the privacy page.
