TikTok doesn't let you turn off the For You page, but on a computer you can shut it with a browser extension. With I've had it in Chrome, Edge, Brave or Arc and TikTok set to No feeds (the default), For You, Following, Explore and Live are shut, while a video someone sends you, a profile you look up and your messages keep working.

Can you turn off For You in TikTok's settings?

No, not at the time of writing. For You is TikTok's main page, and there is no switch for it. What TikTok does offer:

  • Daily screen time limit. TikTok's settings include a daily time limit, and a passcode prompt when you reach it. Teen accounts get a limit by default. It is a real tool, but you can enter the code and carry on.
  • Following. A tab with videos only from accounts you follow. It is still an endless, swipeable feed.
  • Refresh and not interested. You can mark videos as not interesting, filter keywords, and reset your For You feed to start fresh. These change what you see, not how long you watch.

How do I block TikTok's For You page with I've had it?

  1. Add the extension from the install page.
  2. Go through setup. TikTok starts on No feeds.
  3. Make sure Messages always open is ticked for TikTok if you use TikTok messages. It is on by default.
  4. Open tiktok.com. Instead of For You, you see a quiet full-screen page saying the feed is shut, and the video stops.

Which TikTok pages are shut, and what still works?

TikTok pageAddressWith No feeds
For Youtiktok.com/, /foryouShut
Following/followingShut
Explore/exploreShut
Live/liveShut
Messages/messagesOpen as usual, not counted
A video from a link elsewhere/@name/video/...Opens for 30 seconds
A profile, video or search you open yourselfany other pageA short pause, then up to two minutes

A link from outside TikTok, like a chat app or an email, gets a quick pass: it opens for 30 seconds, up to four times an hour. When you type an address or move around inside TikTok, you get the intent gate: a short breath, a reason, then two minutes for that one thing.

When a quick pass or a two-minute window runs out, you are simply asked again what you came for. Staying longer is a new decision, not a default.

Can I allow TikTok for a few minutes a day instead?

Yes. Two softer modes:

  • Daily limit: TikTok works as usual for a set number of minutes a day (10 by default, from 5 up to 90), then the feeds shut until midnight.
  • Ask first: For You opens after a 15-second breath and a reason, for two or five minutes.

If you need the feed once on a shut day, the small link under the button unlocks it for 10 minutes after you type one sentence and wait 60 seconds. If you keep hitting the same wall in a day, I also offer a one-off $1.99 to open the site for an hour.

Does this block TikTok on my phone?

No. The extension works in desktop browsers only. The I've had it phone app shows your numbers from every device and lets you change your plan, but it doesn't block inside the TikTok app yet.

For the phone today, the most useful tools are TikTok's own daily limit, plus Screen Time on iPhone or Digital Wellbeing on Android, which can limit the whole TikTok app. Some people find it easier to remove the phone app and keep TikTok for the odd video someone sends them, opened on a computer. If that sounds like you, stop doomscrolling has more on making that kind of change stick.

Questions

How do I get rid of the For You page on TikTok?

TikTok has no setting to remove it. On a computer, the I've had it extension shuts For You, Following, Explore and Live, and leaves single videos, profiles and messages usable.

Can I still watch a TikTok someone sends me?

Yes. A video link opened from outside TikTok plays for 30 seconds straight away. One you open from inside TikTok gets a short pause and a two-minute window.

Are TikTok messages blocked too?

No. With Messages always open ticked, which is the default, tiktok.com/messages works as usual and isn't counted.

Is TikTok's own screen time limit enough?

For some people, yes. It is easy to get past with the passcode, so if you find yourself entering it every day, a blocker on the computer and a stricter phone limit help.

Does it work in Safari or Firefox?

Not yet. It works in Chrome, Edge, Brave and Arc on a computer.
