To block the Reddit feed but keep threads, shut the pages that list posts without end and leave single threads open. With I've had it in Chrome, Edge, Brave or Arc and Reddit on No feeds, the home feed, Popular, All and subreddit front pages are shut, while a thread you found on Google opens for 30 seconds and Reddit messages work as usual.

What can Reddit do on its own?

Reddit's own controls change what is in the feed, not whether there is one. At the time of writing:

  • Recommendations. Reddit has offered a preference to stop showing recommended posts from communities you haven't joined in your home feed. Setting names move around, so look in your account's preferences.
  • Sort. You can sort by New or Top instead of Best. It changes the order, not the length.
  • Leave communities and mute them. Fewer joined subreddits means a shorter home feed, and muting keeps a community out of it.

All of these keep the scroll engine running. If threads from search are what you actually use, shutting the listings does more.

How do I block the Reddit feed with I've had it?

  1. Add the extension from the install page.
  2. In setup, Reddit starts on Daily limit with 20 minutes a day. Choose No feeds if you want the listings shut all day.
  3. Keep Messages always open ticked for Reddit (on by default).
  4. Search Google for something with "reddit" in the query and open a result. With No feeds, the thread opens with a small 30-second timer at the bottom.
  5. Open reddit.com. The home feed is shut.

Which Reddit pages are feeds, and which are threads?

The rule is simple: a page that lists posts forever is a feed, and a single post is not.

Reddit pageAddressWith No feeds
Homereddit.com/Shut
Best, Hot, New, Top, Rising/best, /hot, /new, /top, /risingShut
Popular and All/r/popular, /r/allShut
A subreddit's front page/r/nameShut
A thread from a link elsewhere/r/name/comments/...Opens for 30 seconds
A thread, profile or search you open yourselfany other pageA short pause, then up to two minutes
Messages and chat/message, /chatOpen as usual, not counted

A thread from Google, an email or a chat gets a quick pass, up to four times an hour. When you browse to a thread from inside Reddit or type its address, you get the intent gate: a short breath, a reason, then two minutes for that thread.

old.reddit.com is covered by the same rules.

Why does a subreddit count as a feed?

Because it is one. A subreddit's front page loads more posts as you scroll, just like the home page. A thread ends. Treating the front page as the feed is what lets you read the one answer you searched for without landing in the list that keeps you for an hour.

Should Reddit be on Daily limit or No feeds?

  • Daily limit (the default): Reddit works as usual for its minutes (20 by default, 5 to 90), then the feeds shut until midnight and threads get the 30-second pass or the pause. Messages don't count while Messages always open is on.
  • No feeds: listings are always shut. Best if you mostly reach Reddit through search.
  • Ask first: listings open after a 15-second breath and a reason, for two or five minutes.

Even inside an allowed window, the scroll check taps you on the shoulder after 25 screens without a pause. Long comment threads count.

Does this work in the Reddit app?

No. The extension works in desktop browsers only. The phone app shows your numbers and changes your plan, but it doesn't block inside the Reddit app. On a phone, Screen Time (iPhone) or Digital Wellbeing (Android) can limit the whole Reddit app. If you mostly use Reddit for answers, reading threads from search in your phone's browser, without the app, is a decent habit on its own.
